Purim exemplifies the spirit of giving, with tradition dictating our making up gifts for the needy (matanot l’evyonim). In honor of this tradition, we ask that you bring pop-top cans (such as soup, chili, tuna, vegetables, etc.) which will be donated to Extended Hands Ministry of Mount Holly for the homeless. Thank you for supporting our vision of tikkun olam, repairing the world.

Purim is coming!!!
Fulfill the mitzvot of shalach manot – and help support THZ

Purim is March 10.  The giving of shalach manot, gifts of food to friends and family, is one of the loveliest mitzvot of Purim. This tradition was established in the Megillah of Esther, when Mordecai sent instructions to the Jewish people to observe Purim as a time of feasting and gladness, and to send gifts to the poor and delicacies to each other. Shalach manot baskets are a special way to let others know you’re thinking of them and wishing them joy at Purim. This year, as a fundraising program, Temple Har Zion is once again offering shalach manot baskets to help members fulfill this mitzvah.  These baskets are filled with an assortment of delicacies, including hamantaschen and other treats as well as a special THZ gift.

Here’s how it works:

Each THZ member that you designate as a recipient of your Purim greeting will receive one basket with a card listing the names of all THZ families who have contributed in their honor. So, for example, if one family sends you a shalach manot basket, you’ll receive one basket with a note indicating who sent the basket. If 10 families send you a shalach manot basket, you’ll receive only one basket, but the note will list the names of all 10 families that honored you by ordering a basket in your name.

In our weekly member email, we’ve included a roster of all THZ members with a place to check the names of those you’d like to honor.  Just return the completed form via email to Laurie Harrison, along with a check payable to Temple Har Zion. You can access the order form online. If you prefer, you can pay online (we kindly request that, if possible, you add 5% to cover credit card processing costs), select “Other” as purpose of donation and enter “shalach manot” under “Detail About Other Donation.” Then email the order form to Laurie, noting that you paid online.

To make your decision easier, we’re offering these special options:

The Purim Special (a best buy!) – send a basket to all THZ members for just $144
Individual Baskets – Send baskets to selected friends and family – both within our congregation and in the community. Individual baskets are $18 each. If you purchase baskets for non-THZ members, you will be responsible for distributing them on your own.
New Lisbon Donation – Send shalach manot greetings to Jewish residents of the New Lisbon Developmental Center. Please enclose $18 for purchase of Purim goodies to help them celebrate this joyful holiday.
Masonic Home Donation – Send shalach manot greetings to Jewish residents of The Masonic Home. Please enclose $18 for purchase of Purim goodies to help them celebrate this joyful holiday.
Purim Donation – make a general tzedakah donation in honor of Purim rather than sending a Shalach Manot basket.
Hamantaschen – Pre-order hamantaschen at $6 per dozen. The flavors are:
chocolate, raspberry, apricot, prune, poppy, mango, and pomegranate

Baskets can be picked up at the synagogue on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. starting March 1. Please let us know if you are unable to pick up your basket; we will gladly donate it. Each year we have many unclaimed baskets. Any basket not picked up by March 15 will be donated unless alternative arrangements have been made.

All payment and orders must be received by Feb. 16. If you have any questions please contact:
Laurie Harrison.

Thank you for making this fundraising effort a huge success.  Best wishes for a happy and healthy Purim.
