Laura Markowitz is honored to serve Temple Har Zion in the role of president, as of July 1, 2017. She follows a long line (over 80 years) of caring, dedicated presidents and thanks them for paving the way for her tenure and for their continued support and guidance.
Laura has been an active Temple Har Zion member for close to 20 years. She recently chaired the Rabbi Search Committee when THZ was looking for just the right rabbi to fill Rabbi Richard Simon’s shoes upon his retirement after 32 years. We found her in Rabbi Tiferet Berenbaum!
From her USY days growing up in a Conservative shul to adult summer learning at Elat Chayyim and Isabella Freedman, Laura has been shaped by many aspects of our Jewish tradition. She loves the traditional liturgy as well as the chants and contemporary language of Jewish Renewal and is deeply connected to our mystical traditions.
To Laura, Temple Har Zion has always felt like a home for her spiritual soul. She is a regular weekly Shabbat service attendee and has led Shabbat evening and morning services, especially since completing Aleph’s Davenning Leadership Training Institute (DLTI 5). Laura has spent time studying texts and Jewish Mysticism with many teachers over the years and taught Hebrew School at THZ (as well as at another area synagogue). She enjoys teaching yoga and Jewish meditation.
Her time at Temple Har Zion has opened many spiritual windows and provided opportunities for learning and community that she is excited to share with all who come to THZ. It is a wonderfully warm community, a Chevra, for Jewish learning and experience, that has nurtured her own exploration of Judaism and allowed it to flourish and find expression.
